Dr. Sbaitso rules! I think a lot of times, a real life doctor can seem cold and heartless, diagnosing diseases and conditions like a machine. But I also think it takes an extra set of eyes in order to tell us when we need to be more specific, or when we're wrong about our own diagnosis.
If everybody had a computer chip in their head, they could do their own diagnosing, by querying the web, or if need be, the hive mind. Until then, maybe we'll end up with a semi-automated process, kind of like how certain phone calls are made. "If you would like to continue the conversation in English, press 1" Beep "If you would like to check your balance, press 1" Beep "You have seventeen dollars and twenty three cents in your account. May I help you with anything else? If so, press 1" Beep "Blah blah blah" Beep beep beep "If you would like to speak with an operator, please stay on the line" ... "Hello, my name is Donald Thompson, how can I help you today?" So maybe in the near future (or already) we'll have websites or phone services that will walk us through an automated diagnosis, but with an option for interaction with an actual on-hand expert. I recently saw somewhere that there are now vending machines for medication. So I guess we're on that path already! |
